Convergence with Uniqueness
As a youth building that reveals the facts as they are, we envision a space for youth where each individual’s uniqueness is expressed and creativity appears dynamically. Through the coexistence of individual differences and the unique tension created by everyday intimacy, it is expected to become a new part of the urban environment as a city object and a friendly place for adolescent. Imagined is Yeonsu youth center as a convergence incubator that contains the thoughts and lives of youths full of individuality and has the driving force to grow them into future members of the local community.
Intimacy in Complexity
Buildings for youth provide more diverse programs than in the past to help them adapt to the social environment in a rapidly changing society, and should be a vessel that well converges these complexities. The building is designed to honestly reveal this diversity with geometric elements, so that the character of unadorned and candid teenagers was shaped into the building.
Our design seeks to actively harmonize with the surroundings. The inside and outside of the building should be linked seamlessly through an outdoor terrace and stair connection that subdivides the scale of the building. In addition, through the facade of the grid with familiarity from the surroundings, it gives order into the diversification of programs and naturally permeates into the urban environment.
Inverted “Big” Room
It is a space where youth can actively promote their creativity, and designs to use it as a space where they can creatively utilize the space through vertically and horizontally open area where the concept of Halls and Rooms is blended.
As exterior geometrical design elements are inverted and expanded to the inside, spatial scalability is added by blurring the boundaries of the building, which will make the interior and exterior spatially connected, and the placement of floating rooms will be a visual trigger to stimulate youth’s creative activities.
01. The site is surrounded by existing buildings, new administrative welfare center, and a building to be built on religious site, making it an environment that can be linked to buildings more actively along the 10M road. In particular, a structurally influential gymnasium and swimming pool are arranged at the top to provide room for more free use of the space on the ground floor.
02. On the western adjacent site, the planned public yard and axis through our site are set up, and the atrium, yard, and side entrance are planned there to establish a visual and movement relationship with the surroundings.
03. The corner of the site is designed as an open platform and becomes an observation deck where teenagers and residents who use sports facilities can view the surrounding environment. By planning an entrance staircase that can be directly accessed from the corner of the site to the sports facilities, students and residents separate their circulations and add intimacy by segmented building scale.
04. Geometric design elements are applied to the entrance, stairs, and skylight at each corner of the building to enhance the symbolism of the youth center and design a massing that can stimulate the curiosity of adolescent.
